NDIS Plan Reassessment Changes: What Participants Need to Know

    2 minute readBy Derek Feher

The rules around requesting an early NDIS plan reassessment have changed. For participants whose circumstances have significantly changed, understanding the process is particularly important.

    Key points

    • The rules around requesting an early NDIS plan reassessment have changed.
    • For participants whose circumstances have significantly changed, understanding the process is particularly important.

    What has changed?

Following changes to NDIS legislation, only the participant, plan nominee or child representative can request an early plan reassessment. An occupational therapist, support coordinator or other provider can still help explain your needs and prepare evidence, but cannot make this request on your behalf.

An early reassessment may still be requested after a significant and ongoing change to functional capacity, support needs, living arrangements, education, employment or informal supports.

How long does the NDIA have to respond?

The NDIA has 90 days to decide whether to reassess a plan after receiving the required information. Short-term or urgent changes may still be considered through a plan variation where appropriate.

    Why does functional evidence matter?

Saying that a situation has changed is different from showing how support needs have changed. If a parent can no longer provide care, for example, the evidence should identify which tasks they completed, how often, what happens without that help, and what formal support is now required.

What changed → How function changed → What support is now required → Why

    Our approach

When we complete a Functional Capacity Assessment after a significant change, we look beyond diagnosis. We compare previous and current function where possible, identify changes in formal and informal supports, consider risk, and explain the assistance now required.

If your current plan no longer reflects your functional needs, an updated assessment may help document the change clearly.
