NDIS updates
When Is an Updated FCA Useful for an NDIS Plan Reassessment?
A plan reassessment does not automatically mean you need another FCA. Updated evidence is most useful when it answers a current question or documents a meaningful change.
Key points
- A plan reassessment does not automatically mean you need another FCA.
- Updated evidence is most useful when it answers a current question or documents a meaningful change.
A new plan date does not always require a new FCA
An FCA should have a clear clinical purpose. If function, supports and circumstances remain stable, and the existing evidence still answers the relevant questions, repeating the entire assessment may not be a good use of time or funding.
The first step is to review what evidence already exists, when it was completed and whether it still reflects the participant's daily life.
When updated evidence may be helpful
A full or targeted reassessment may be useful when there has been a significant change or when an important decision cannot be made from the existing information.
- Function, health, mobility, cognition or safety has changed
- A family member can no longer provide the same informal support
- The participant is moving home or considering SIL, SDA or another living arrangement
- New equipment, home modifications or a different support model is being considered
- Current reports no longer reflect the person's abilities or assistance needs
- Previous evidence identifies a need but does not clearly explain its functional basis
Full FCA or focused update?
Not every change requires a full assessment across every area of life. Sometimes a focused review, progress report, equipment assessment or Home and Living assessment answers the question more directly.
A Support Coordinator or health professional can help identify the decision being prepared for, while the occupational therapist can advise on the assessment scope. This avoids collecting reports simply because a plan end date is approaching.
What strong reassessment evidence does
The NDIS guidance for allied health plan reassessment reports asks clinicians to explain their approach, outcomes and progress towards the participant's goals. Where circumstances have changed, evidence should describe what changed, how daily function or support needs are affected, and the basis for current recommendations.
Today & Tomorrow Allied Health Services provides FCA and related assessment across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan and regional service areas, with Telehealth available Australia-wide. FCA reports are completed within 10 business days after the final appointment and receipt of the required information.
The right report answers the current question — it does not repeat evidence for its own sake.
Ask what evidence is missing before repeating an FCA
A plan reassessment and a review of a disputed decision are different processes. Ask which decision is being prepared for and whether a focused update answers it. An assessment recommendation is evidence, not an assurance of NDIS approval.
