Key points
- From February 2027, plan continuations are scheduled to be replaced by plan renewals, with an important change to unused funding.
How will it work?
When a plan is due for reassessment, the NDIA may reassess it or create a new plan containing the same supports. That second process is called a plan renewal. Under the announced reforms, unspent funding from the previous plan will not carry over.
Should I spend everything before my plan ends?
No. NDIS funding should be used for appropriate disability-related supports, not spent unnecessarily because a plan is ending. The change does make it more important to understand plan utilisation throughout the plan period.
Does everyone need a new FCA?
Not necessarily. An updated assessment can be valuable when function, living circumstances or support needs have changed, or when existing evidence is outdated. Repeating a full assessment when nothing meaningful has changed may not be the best use of funding.
Our approach
We take an individual approach. We explain when updated evidence has a genuine clinical purpose and do not recommend a new FCA simply because a plan is nearing its end.
Good occupational therapy should provide value — not unnecessary reports.
