T-Documents Explained: Seeing the Evidence the NDIA Is Relying On
One of the most useful things in an ART review is a bundle most applicants have never heard of: the T-documents.
Key points
- One of the most useful things in an ART review is a bundle most applicants have never heard of: the T-documents.
What T-documents are
Once an ART application is lodged, the NDIA must give you and the Tribunal a set of documents known as the T-documents — the material the agency relied on (or had) when it made the decision, plus the statement of reasons for the decision.
In plain terms: you get to see the file. What evidence they looked at, what they ignored, and the exact reasoning behind the rejection.
Why they change everything
Before the T-documents arrive, you're often guessing why the NDIA said no. Afterwards, you know. And knowing the actual reasoning lets you target your evidence precisely — if the decision says 'insufficient evidence of overnight support needs', you now know exactly what an assessment needs to demonstrate.
This is where independent OT evidence is most powerful. A report written to answer the decision's stated reasons is far more persuasive than a generic functional summary. When we complete assessments for Tribunal matters, the decision letter and statement of reasons shape the entire assessment.
What to do when yours arrives
Read the statement of reasons first, then the supporting material. Note every claim you disagree with and every gap. That list becomes your evidence plan — and it's exactly the information to send when enquiring about an independent assessment.
Our ART enquiry form has a dedicated place for what was rejected and the NDIA's reasons, precisely because it determines what evidence will actually help. See the NDIS ART review assessments page for the full process.
