More Than a Long Drive: How a Rural OT Trip Comes Together

    2 minute readBy Derek Feher

A rural visit starts well before the car is packed. Good preparation helps make limited face-to-face time useful and keeps support moving afterwards.

    Key points

    • A rural visit starts well before the car is packed.
    • Good preparation helps make limited face-to-face time useful and keeps support moving afterwards.

    Before the visit

A rural trip begins with referral information, conversations with the participant and their supports, and a clear understanding of what genuinely needs to happen in person. Existing reports, photographs and equipment details can help focus the visit without replacing direct assessment.

    Making face-to-face time count

When clinician availability is limited, every visit needs a purpose. The day may include observing daily tasks, reviewing the home environment, completing measurements, meeting support workers or trialling equipment with a local supplier.

Care continues after the road trip

Telehealth is useful for follow-up conversations, report clarification, coaching and monitoring progress. It lets the relationship continue between regional visits rather than turning one appointment into an isolated event.

The aim is simple: thoughtful face-to-face assessment when it matters, supported by responsive care from wherever the participant lives.
