NDIS updates
Are NDIS Functional Capacity Assessments Disappearing in 2027?
The short answer is no — but the role of Functional Capacity Assessments is changing as a new planning framework approaches.
Key points
- The short answer is no — but the role of Functional Capacity Assessments is changing as a new planning framework approaches.
What is happening?
From 1 April 2027, the NDIA is scheduled to begin introducing a new way of planning. A Support Needs Assessment is intended to provide a more consistent view of support needs and help inform budgets. The start was delayed to allow further consultation, testing and refinement.
Why is the NDIS doing this?
One aim is to reduce situations where participants feel they must spend thousands of dollars on reports each time a plan is developed. Participant funding should primarily support participants.
Where does this leave FCAs?
A standardised assessment and a comprehensive occupational therapy assessment serve different purposes. Detailed clinical analysis may still be needed for complex Home and Living decisions, SIL, SDA, major assistive technology, home modifications, manual handling, significant changes in function or situations where standardised information does not capture the person's needs.
Our approach
We focus on clinical usefulness: functional performance, environment, risk, support requirements, appropriate standardised assessment and practical recommendations. We will adapt as the NDIA publishes further requirements.
What can this person do, what can they not do safely or independently, what support do they require, and why?
