Good Home Modifications Start With Daily Life — Not a Floor Plan

    2 minute readBy Derek Feher

A wider doorway or redesigned bathroom only works when it reflects the person, their routines, equipment and support network.

    Key points

    • A wider doorway or redesigned bathroom only works when it reflects the person, their routines, equipment and support network.

The person comes before the design

A home modification assessment starts with what happens across an ordinary day. We look at how the person moves, where assistance is needed, which equipment is used and what creates risk or restricts independence.

    Small details have lasting effects

Door circulation, transfer space, floor gradients, fixture heights and the position of supports can determine whether a design works in practice. Measurements matter, but so do fatigue, cognition, sensory needs, manual handling and the needs of family or support workers.

    Working with the wider team

Complex modifications often require collaboration between the participant, occupational therapist, builder, designer, support team and funder. Clear communication helps the clinical intention survive the journey from recommendation to completed work.

The strongest outcome is not simply a compliant room. It is a home that supports safer, more workable daily life.
