What Actually Works in a Telehealth OT Appointment?

    2 minute readBy Derek Feher

Telehealth works best when it is chosen for the task — not treated as a lesser copy of an in-person appointment.

    Key points

    • Telehealth works best when it is chosen for the task — not treated as a lesser copy of an in-person appointment.

    Work that translates well online

Telehealth can work particularly well for interviews, goal setting, routine review, coaching, report feedback, care-needs discussions and collaboration with family or support workers. A phone or tablet can also show parts of a home or daily task in real time when it is safe to do so.

    When face-to-face matters

Hands-on assessment, complex equipment trials, detailed environmental measurements and some physical or safety assessments are better completed in person. Being pro-Telehealth means being honest about its limits.

Why blended care can be stronger

For rural participants, Telehealth can begin information gathering before a regional visit and provide follow-up afterwards. This reduces delays and makes the in-person appointment more focused.

The best delivery method is the one that answers the clinical question safely while respecting the participant's preference and circumstances.
