Mandatory SIL Registration: What Participants Need to Know Before October 2026

Key points
- Supported Independent Living registration requirements strengthened from 1 July 2026, with an important transition deadline approaching for existing providers.
What is changing?
New providers delivering Supported Independent Living have needed to be registered from 1 July 2026. Existing unregistered SIL providers must follow the NDIS Commission's transition pathway, including applying by the published October deadline if they intend to continue delivering SIL.
Will my SIL funding disappear?
No. The registration change itself does not remove SIL funding from a participant's plan. If a provider successfully registers, a participant does not need to change providers solely because of the reform. If a provider does not meet the requirements, transition planning may be needed.
What does an occupational therapist do?
Our role is independent from the SIL provider. A Home and Living assessment can consider personal care, domestic function, cognition, behaviour, mobility, manual handling, community access, supervision, safety and overnight support.
Recommendations for shared support, 1:1 help, active or inactive overnight assistance, or periods of 2:1 support should arise from functional evidence and risk — not simply from a provider's preferred staffing model.
Why independence matters
A staffing model that suits one provider does not automatically meet every participant's needs. Independent assessment keeps the participant's function, safety, preferences and environment at the centre of the recommendation.
