24/7 NDIS Support and SIL: What the Changes Mean
For participants who need support around the clock, the SIL reforms make independent, functional evidence especially important.
Key points
- For participants who need support around the clock, the SIL reforms make independent, functional evidence especially important.
What has changed?
Mandatory registration requirements for Supported Independent Living commenced for new providers on 1 July 2026, with transition arrangements for existing unregistered providers. These registration reforms are about provider oversight; they do not, by themselves, change a participant's SIL funding.
Why does evidence matter?
Saying that a person requires 24/7 support is a conclusion. A good Home and Living assessment explains whether the person can safely be alone, what happens overnight, whether interventions are predictable, and whether active or inactive overnight assistance is appropriate.
- Are manual handling tasks likely to require two workers?
- Do periods of risk or behaviours of concern support a need for 2:1 assistance?
- Could some daytime support be shared safely?
- What supervision is needed across the full day and overnight?
Our role
Our role is different from the SIL provider's. We independently assess function across the full 24-hour period, including personal care, domestic activities, cognition, behaviour, mobility, medication, community access, supervision, safety and overnight needs.
Where we recommend 1:1, 2:1, active overnight or continuous assistance, the report explains the functional evidence and risk supporting that recommendation.
